Orphans as Superheroes Batman, Spiderman and Superman - Free Essay Example

Superheroes as Orphans   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Three of the most well known superheroes, Batman, Spiderman and Superman are all orphans. The loss of their parents is a defining moment in the lives of each of these characters. In both literature and film, orphaned characters are very common. This type of background provides many opportunities for deep character development. It also allows the audience to be sympathetic and understanding of the flaws of these characters. As Kimball (1990) explains: Orphans are at once pitiable and noble. They are a manifestation of loneliness, but they also represent the possibility for humans to reinvent themselves. Orphans begin with a clean slate because they do not have parents to influence them either for good or for evil. They embody the hope that whatever the present situation, it can change for the better. When orphans succeed against all odds, their success ultimately becomes ours. We can look to orphans and say, You see, there is hope for all of us if even this orphan child can overcome obstacles and succeed. (p. 559) Batman, Spiderman and Superman are all considered superheroes and the loss of their parents plays a large role in their transformation from regular people to their alter egos. Bruce Wayne is an eight year-old boy w hen he tragically witnesses the murder of his parents, Thomas and Martha Wayne. Through flashbacks in Batman Begins (2005) we learn that the family leaves the theatre when Bruce becomes afraid of bats in the production. They are walking in an alley when they are approached by a man who tries to steal his mothers pearl Moench 2 necklace. During the struggle both his mother and father are shot to death while Bruce is watching. Bruce will forever carry the guilt of feeling that it was his fault that his parents were killed because he was the one who wanted to leave the theatre. Bruce is a millionaire who grows up and vows to take revenge against criminals and corruption. He is constantly driven by the desire to avenge the death of his parents. He traveled the world trying to find his place because he did not have parents to guide him. He needs to find himself before he can help others. Eventually he returns home and he takes on a bat-themed persona to become a superhero. Batman does not have any super powers but he uses his intellect, physical strength, detective skills, science and his wealth to fight crime. He has a deep-rooted sense of justice. Bruce Waynes personality is detached and he does not have many close relationships outside of Alfred, the family butler. Alfred serves as his surrogate family after the death of his parents. Of the three superheroes discussed in this paper, Batman is the most relatable superhero because he is human and has no special powers. His guilt and fear are what drive him. His sense of failure from not saving his parents is something that always follows him. With the help of Alfred, he tries to honor his parents values while taking justice into his own hands. Batman is extremely strong willed and set in his ways. He will never back down from a challenge and is not willing to compromise his morals. His beliefs are strong and drive him to fight for justice. He was also afraid that if he did not fight crime there would be another young boy orphaned as he was. Had Bruce Wayne not been orphaned as a child, his path in life would have been very different. Moench 3 Peter Parker suffers the loss of both his parents and his uncle who raised him after the death of his parents. Growing up there was nothing about his physical or social skills that would lead you to believe he would become a superhero. He was socially awkward and physically small and uncoordinated. Peter was bullied and lonely as a child. He grew very close to his Uncle Ben as result of his lack of friends. In Spider-Man (2002) we learn that Peter was bitten by a radioactive spider while visiting a genetics lab. By the next day he transforms into a stronger, more physically fit teenager. He realizes that he has superhuman speed, he can stick to any surface and he now has the ability to sense any kind of danger. Peter starts out by using his new powers for his own benefit. His Uncle Ben warns Peter with the famously quoted line, With great power comes great responsibility.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Shortly after that Uncle Ben is killed by a robber who Peter let escape from the promoters office. Peter changes his life to become Spider Man and vows to avenge the death of his Uncle Ben. Even though he wears a superhero costume and is thought of as a hero, he does not feel that way. Despite the costume he still has many of the same insecurities he had as a child. He feels like an outsider in almost every situation. His super powers are just one more thing that makes him different from everyone else. His activities as Spiderman benefit the world around him, but do nothing to help his daily life. He is one of the most realistic superhero characters. Peter Parker worries about many of the same things that normal people do. He has money, relationship and confidence issues. As Spiderman, he wants to save lives and vows to never let criminals get away. He tries to relieve some of the guilt that he feels about Uncle Bens death. He finds his purpose in helping others and making the world a better place. Moench 4  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Clark Kent lands on earth after his parents send him off his home planet of Krypton and it explodes. He lands in Smallville, Kansas where he is found and adopted by Jonathan and Martha Kent. The Kents give Clark a humble, but loving home life. Through flashbacks in Man of Steel (2013) we learn that Clark discovered his X-ray vision, super hearing, flying and strength as a young boy. The discovery of these powers leads to him isolate himself from other people. He feels the need to hide these powers from people outside of Jonathan and Martha. After Jonathan dies in a tornado, Clark feels more lost and troubled and goes off to travel and find himself. Despite having superpowers he was unable to save his father. He had assumed that he could save the world. He feels disconnected from his homeland, his family and everything in his life. Man of Steel (2013) shows Clark Kent as a teenager who has not yet become Superman. He is still struggling with his powers and his loss of his parents. It is through his upbringing by the Kents that he develops a strong moral code and a sense of family. After a message from his late father to become Earths greatest protector, Clark embraces his role as Superman. He chooses to search and fight for truth and justice. Superman sacrifices his happiness in order to save others. He is determined to use his powers for the greater good. The superhero genre is very successful in the film industry. It is one of the reasons that these movies continue to be made. Each of these characters has an entire franchise based on them. Different writers, directors and actors have interpreted each of these characters. Each interpretation has some variance in the characters personality, but the main themes of being an orphan, loss, loneliness, resilience and determination are consistent in each of the different movies. Moench 5 All three of the superheroes share some common traits based on their being raised without their birth families. They are all superheroes on the outside but all have insecurities on the inside. They all struggled as young children and had many fears based on the circumstances that made them orphans. Even though they all had shortcomings, they chose alter egos that were strong, determined and resilient. Their own inability to help those they loved was a driving force in their desire to help others. Without these deep-rooted insecurities they may not have had the strength to go from victims to superheroes. Each of these superheroes is an outsider and loner in their real lives. They feel disconnected from most people and keep themselves closed off emotionally. The walls they put up around themselves make it easier for them to disappear and become their superhero alter egos. The lack of many close relationships and obligations is filled by the overwhelming sense of responsibility they feel toward helping other people.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Guilt is also an underlying theme for each of these characters. They all inadvertently played a role in the loss of their parents and loved ones. Batman believes that his fear of bats led his family to the alley where his parents were murdered. Peter Parker was orphaned and then played a role in the death of his Uncle Ben. Superman did not use his powers to save his adopted father, Jonathan Kent. Each character has devoted their life to helping others to help them deal with the guilt of not helping their loved ones when they needed them.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   So, with all these flaws how are they superheroes? The same traits that drag them down also help to make them determined and resilient. They know that they need to depend on themselves and that they have an inner strength that prevails when they are in their superhero roles. They are no longer passive in the face of danger. Moench 6   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Despite all the shortcomings that we see in each of these characters, we truly believe in their roles as superheroes. Batman, Spiderman and Superman have amazing powers and strengths, but those strengths are offset by their emotional baggage. The viewing audience empathizes with their tragedies and failures.   We want to root for their successes knowing that they were hard won. Who does not love a story of an underdog who becomes a hero? Hollywood sure does, because they continue to bank on that storyline and audiences continue to line up for these movies.

Literary Elements Of The Tale Tell Heart - 1059 Words

The short story the Tale Tell Heart, Edger Allen Poe uses many literary elements to show the theme of the story. Some of the literary elements that Poe uses are first person narrator, interior monologue, and cosmic irony. With these elements Poe is able to display the theme of the story which is, we are afraid of the things we don’t understand and a guilty conscience will win out in the end. These are the themes and elements of Poe’s short story. Poe uses first person narration all throughout this story. He does this by using past tense language as if he was telling you this in person. By using this element of first person narration it is able appeal more to the reader in an emotional way. The reader feels as if the protagonist is†¦show more content†¦Object there was none. Passion there was none. I loved the old man. He had never wronged me. He had never given me insult. For his gold I had no desire. I think it was his eye! yes, it was this! He had the eye of a vulture --a pale blue eye, with a film over it. Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold; and so by degrees --very gradually --I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever†(41). This brings up one of the themes of the story, we are afraid of what we don’t understand. The Protagonist was afraid of the old mans eye, he describes it as blue with a film over it. This indicates that the old man was blind in that one eye. It is natural for us humans to be afraid of what we don’t understand, it is so then understandable that the protagonist was afraid of the eye. If the protagonist took time to understand the reason why the was the that it was, he might have not killed the old man in the at all. We can learn from this and realize that we are not all made the same and some people my have abnormalities that others are creeped out by. If we take time to learn about one another and not jump to conclusions then the world would be a better place. At the ending of the story Poe uses cosmic irony when the Protagonist can no longer stand the sound of the old mans beating heart. Poe uses this kind of irony to show that a guilty conscience will most of the time win out orShow MoreRelatedAnalysis of Edgar Allen Poes The Tell-Tale Heart1428 Words   |  6 Pagesï » ¿Edgar Allen Poes 1843 short story The Tell-Tale Heart is about a young man who becomes mortally obsessed with an old mans creepy eye and ultimately kills him. Risk Management free essay sample

What is risk management? Why is identification of risks, by listing assets and their vulnerabilities, so important to the risk management process? Risk management is the process of identifying risk, as represented by vulnerabilities, to an organization’s information assets and infrastructure, and taking steps to reduce this risk to an acceptable level. Each of the three elements in the C. I. A. triangle, introduced in Chapter 1, is an essential part of every IT organization’s ability to sustain long-term competitiveness. When an organization depends on IT-based systems to remain viable, information security and the discipline of risk management must become an integral part of the economic basis for making business decisions. These decisions are based on trade-offs between the costs of applying information systems controls and the benefits realized from the operation of secured, available systems. 2. According to Sun Tzu, what two key understandings must you achieve to be successful? Know Yourself and Know the Enemy. We will write a custom essay sample on Risk Management or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Who is responsible for risk management in an organization? Which community of interest usually takes the lead in information security risk management? The resources used when undertaking information asset risk management is usually provided by all three communities: Information Security, Information Technology and General Management. 4. In risk management strategies, why must periodic review be a part of the process? Periodic reviews must be a part of the risk management strategies because threats are constantly changing for a company. Also once any specific vulnerability is completely managed by an existing control it no longer needs to be considered for additional controls. 5. Why do networking components need more examination from an information security perspective than from a systems development perspective? Networking components need more examination from an information security perspective than from a systems development perspective because networking subsystems are often the focal point of attacks against the system. 6. What value does an automated asset inventory system have for the risk identification process? An automated asset inventory system would be valuable to the risk identification process because all hardware components are already identified – models, make and locations – thus management can review for the most critical items and assess the values. 7. What information attributes is often of great value for networking equipment when DHCP is not used? IP Address 8. Which is more important to the systems components classification scheme, that the list be comprehensive or mutually exclusive? It is more important that the list be comprehensive than mutually exclusive. It would be far better to have a component assessed in an incorrect category rather than to have it go completely unrecognized during a risk assessment. 9. What’s the difference between an asset’s ability to generate revenue and its ability to generate profit? The main difference between a revenue-generating asset and a profit-generating asset is that the revenue-generating asset produces a cash flow that is linked directly to the asset. If the asset were sold, the cash flow would stop. With a profit-generating asset, the linkage is not so direct. The asset does not produce cash directly, but influences consumer and competitor behavior with the intention of producing more revenues. 10. What are vulnerabilities and how do you identify them? A vulnerability is a weak spot in your network that might be exploited by a security threat. Risks are the potential consequences and impacts of unaddressed vulnerabilities. Vulnerability assessment tools or scanners are used to identify vulnerabilities within the network. The vulnerabilities identified by most of these tools extend beyond software defects (which are fixed by patching) to include other easily exploitable vulnerabilities, such as unsecured accounts, misconfigurations and even back doors. There are several types of assessment tools available. Although these tools have general similarities, they can vary in the methods and processes they employ to identify vulnerabilities. As a best practice, you shouldnt rely on a single assessment tool but should use different tools to gain a broader perspective of their exposure to vulnerabilities. Open-source or shareware assessment tools are available online and can be used to supplement commercial scanners 11. What is competitive disadvantage? Why has it emerged as a factor? Competitive disadvantage is the state of falling behind the competition. It has emerged as a factor because business which do not stay on the cutting edge of IT can quickly fall behind the competition, given the current fast pace of technological advances. 12. What are the strategies from controlling risk as described in this chapter? The four risk control strategies are avoidance, transference, mitigation and acceptance. 13. Describe the â€Å"defend† strategy. List and describe the three common methods. The strategy of avoidance involves applying controls that eliminate or reduce the remaining uncontrolled risks. Application of policy, Training and education, and Applying technology 14. Describe the â€Å"transfer† strategy. Describe how outsourcing can be used for this purpose. The strategy of transference involves shifting risks to other areas or outside entities. Outsourcing can be used for risk transference by outsourcing security-sensitive areas which are not central to the organizations purpose and letting the outsourcing firm accept the risk. ($$$). 15. Describe the â€Å"mitigate† strategy. What three planning approaches are discussed in the text as opportunities to mitigate risk? The strategy of mitigation involves reducing the impact should an attacker successfully exploit the vulnerability. Incident response plan (IRP), Disaster recovery plan (DRP), Business continuity plan (BCP) ?. 16. How is an incident response plan different from a disaster recovery plan? Incident response plan (IRP) focuses on immediate response to an incident. Disaster recovery plan (DRP) focuses on restoring operations at the primary site after disasters occur. 17. What is risk appetite? Explain why risk appetite varies from organization to organization? 18. What is a Cost Benefit Analysis? Cost–benefit analysis (CBA), sometimes called benefit–cost analysis (BCA), is a systematic process for calculating and comparing benefits and costs of a project, decision or government policy. What is the definition of single loss expectancy? What is annual loss expectancy? Single Loss Expectancy (SLE) is the amount of loss expected for any single successful threat attack on any given asset. This is a monetary value that describes how much the incident will cost in terms of lost asset value. Annual Loss Expectancy (ALE) estimates the annual loss resulting from an incident. 20. What is residual risk? Residual risk: risk that has not been completely removed, shifted, or planned for. Exercise: If an organization has three information assets to evaluate for risk management as shown in the accompanying data, which vulnerability should be evaluated for additional controls first? Which one should be evaluated last? An evaluation of the provided asset vulnerabilities results in: Asset A: This is a switch that has two vulnerabilities. The first involves a hardware failure likelihood of 0. 2 and the second involves a buffer attack likelihood of 0. 1. The switch has an impact rating of 90. Assumptions made on this asset have a 75% certainty. Asset B: This is a web server that deals with e-commerce transactions. It has one vulnerability with a likelihood of 0. 1. However it has an impact rating of 100. Assumptions made on this asset have an 80% certainty. Asset C: This is a control console with no password protection with a likelihood of attack of 0. 1. It has no controls and an impact rating of 5. Assumptions made on this asset have a 90% certainty. ANSWER: Even though the switch has the highest risk I would evaluate the web server for additional controls first. The company Web site is hosted by this server and performs valuable e-commerce transactions which can be compromised if the Server is not protected. If an attack on this Server occurs much of the company’s private data could be compromised which could harm the organization in many ways. Protecting the server could also keep the organization safe from other threats and attacks. I would evaluate the control console that monitors operations in the server room last because the likelihood of misuse is low and it has the lowest impact value and poses the least amount of risk to the organization. Risk Management free essay sample The company generates its electricity at the Niagara Falls and distributes it to various Canadian provinces and the United States. Founded in 1906 as the Hydro-Electric Power Commission, the corporation was later renamed to Ontario Hydro in 1974. In 1998, the provincial government passed the â€Å"Energy Competition Act†. Ontario Hydro was restructured into two separate organizations: a power generation utility and a combined transmission/delivery business to be called Hydro one. 2. Hydro One’s Strategy and risks Hydro Ones strategy has changed a lot during the last years. First of all, the company thought they knew what was best for their customers. Eventually their focus changed into a more customer-based strategy. With the change in their focus in addressing the needs of their customers, customer satisfaction has, in some areas, doubled. Although results have been positive, problems for the electricity supply in the future might decrease the satisfaction of the customers. In the corporate risk profile trends, the electricity supply has become one of the biggest risks with a rating of ‘virtually certain’. We will write a custom essay sample on Risk Management or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Only â€Å"government policy uncertainty† and â€Å"getting the work done† have the same level of risk. In the impact-probability risk map of the firm, it is clear that problems with the electricity supply are quite probable and that the magnitude is considerably large. There’s always a risk of new outages, which can affect over 100. 000 customers for more than seven days in the worst-case scenario. Worst case expectations about the service quality indices predict that only 25% of the overall expected performance will be achieved when the best case scenario predicts 95%: it is already quite certain that the 100% achievement will be impossible. Another big issue in Hydro One’s strategy is cost efficiency. Due to its aging assets, the company had to focus on cutting costs. This initiative resulted in Rating Agencies improving Hydros rating on its long term debt to A, A2 and A (high), respectively. On the other hand, employees protested heavily against these measures by a major 18 weeks strike. Unfortunately, reducing unit costs to its desired level might fail in the end. Only in the minor case scenario the unit costs are not reduced, other scenarios predict an increase of 5 to more than 25%. Cheap electricity encouraged Canadian consumers to increase their purchases of energy-intensive consumer devices. Hydro One had to cope with this increased demand on its aging assets, so it launched an active conservation and demand management program. In this way, Hydro One is undertaking conservation initiatives, despite their adverse impact on the companys revenues and earnings. Electricity supply is one of the biggest risks; the former Pikangihum chief even mentioned the problem to turn on Christmas lights. The vision that CEO Formusa endorsed in a strategic plan is to make Hydro One the best transmission and distribution business in North America. This vision would be achieved by having the best safety record in the world, top quartile transmission and distribution reliability, 90% customer satisfaction across all segments, top quartile employee productivity, operating efficiency and an A credit rating. The CEO also intended to reach out and negotiate a long-term deal with the unions. The risks concerning safety were big from 2002 till 2004 but are under more under control since 2005. 3. Major drivers to get started with ERM at Hydro One As part of the firm’s spinoff from the previous Ontario Hydro and in preparation of an IPO, the management and board of Hydro One set high goals for being a best-practices organization with superior corporate governance and business conduct. In preparation of the IPO, they responded to the requirement of the Toronto Stock Exchange for listed companies to implement strategic risk management. Despite this IPO was forced to a halt in the Ontario Superior Court, Hydro One continued to follow their value creation strategy including the implementation of ERM and a risk-based investment planning system. At the same time, the government of Ontario posed a new challenge that had to be addressed with a scheduled deregulation of the electricity markets involving conservation initiatives. Other new policies in the energy industry like carbon legislation, the adoption of renewable technologies and climate change posed new threats and opportunities. In brief, the increased scrutiny on corporate governance called for a comprehensive risk management program. 4. Different stages of Hydro One’s ERM process Hydro One introduced a three-phase risk management program: In phase one, a risk management team organizes a series of interactive risk workshops in order to make the employees of the firm familiar with the companies’ key strategic objectives and the principal risks faced by the organization. Prior to these workshops, the risk team made a list of 60-70 potential risks or threats to the business. This list was e-mailed to the participating management. Based on their feedback, the risk team shortens the list to 8-10 risks. These shortlisted risks then are discussed during the workshops. In phase two, the risk team prepares a corporate risk profile report for the executive team twice a year, in January and July. In this report, the principal risks facing the organization are summarized. The chief risk officer conducts a series of one-to-one interviews with the top 30 to 40 top executives to review the corporate risk profile. This half-yearly monitoring and review of risk is very important within the ERM process, because risks do not remain static. In phase 3, during the annual planning process, the investment planning department and the risk management team jointly develop an approach for allocating resources to prioritized investment project proposals based on the risks identified. The chief financial officer argues that looking at investment proposals from a risk management point of view gives high visibility to capital expenditure planning in order to let the top management make the right investment decisions. 5. Up- and downsides of the ERM process Hydro One developed enterprise risk management in response to a new corporate governance requirement. A positive thing about Hydro One’s ERM process is that it includes all layers of the organization. Employees need to participate in a series of workshops to learn more about the company’s objectives and their risks. The method that Hydro One applies is structured, systematic and on a timely basis which are all key principles of risk management. It provides a foundation for all risk data across the organization and delivers visibility to this data. This has improved accountability and control within the company. An enormous benefit of the ERM process for Hydro One was that the company achieved a lower cost of debt. However, if the company decides to change its client-based strategy, it might be wise to review the ERM process and make some necessary changes. The corporation also uses the Delphi-method, which is a valuable communication technique when properly used. One needs to keep in mind, when applying the Delphi method, that the role of the supervisor may not be underestimated. It is he who needs to rearrange the data. Subjectivity might play a role, so it might be wise for Hydro One to find somebody else than Fraser to handle the risk management activities. In the end, ERM is more a state of mind than a technique or process. When all layers of the company have a mutual understanding about the company’s objectives and risks, one can say the ERM process has been successful. Hydro One’s ERM process will surely pass this test. 6. Framework There are a lot of different frameworks available these times. But the ISO 31000 Framework is the best practice framework because it is relatively easy to implement in an organization’s structure and still gives some good outcomes for the company. The Frameworks are used to facilitate the implementation of the ERM process into an organization. The core of the ISO 31000 Framework is the Risk Management Process (RMP). RMP consists of five important tasks. Further, the ISO 31000 Framework adds Management Information System (MIS). Risk management activities should be recorded. In this way, it is easier to know which actions are taken to counter the risk threats. The company will be able to react in a faster way to important changes in factors that could affect the organisation. Another important feature of the Framework can be found in Commit and Mandate. It is important to fully intergrate the ERM process in the organization. Every agent or stakeholder should be involved in the ERM process. Communication and consultation are key elements in every organization. But to implement the ERM process, communication becomes even more important. Communicating with all your stakeholders is crucial. Everyone needs to be aware of the possible risk the company is facing and the actions that are taken to mitigate these risks. The next important process of the ISO 31000 Framework is Accountability. For every identified risks, the company will have to assign a manager as risk-owner. They need to make clear who is responsible for which risk. Obviously, every agent or stakeholder has to participate in the process of countering risks. It is clear that the ERM process should be monitored and reviewed continuously. Because of a fast changing economic world, the ERM process should be adapted to these conditions. 6. 1 Establishing the context Hydro One is trying to be able to meet the high demand in hot weather springs and summers. Due to the aging infrastructure, Hydro One is facing high maintenance and growing costs. While they were planning to introduce cost-cutting initiatives they have to take into account these costs. Their main goal is to be able to report optimal financial results. This can be done in two ways. On the one hand, they have to make sure there are sufficient revenues. On the other hand, costs and expenses have to be kept under control. The problem of the 18-week during strike has caused an environment in the company where not everyone is heading in the same direction. So Hydro One is challenged to make sure there is a common culture in the company. 6. 2 Risk assessment Risk identification Identifying the likelihood and consequences of the different risks is done by organizing workshops wherein employees can participate. They are asked to express their feelings about the risks that might threaten the organization. Risk analysis Employees need to identify which business activities are affected by those different types of risks and in which degree on a 5-point scale. By doing this, every risk is looked at from another point of view. Each person identifies a different impact based on his or her area of expertise. Risks that are rated higher than 3, are more investigated in detail. They identify the worst-case scenario for each of those risks if something goes wrong within the company. After this process the company will have a clear view in the magnitude of a given risk, the probability of occurrence of a certain risk in a 2-3 year time period and the strength of the key controls in the company. If some of these key controls fail, it could cause a lot of damage to the company. Risk evaluation One had to be aware of the fact that risk is not a static concept. The level of risk a company is facing can depend on the whole environment of the company and the actions taken to mitigate the risk. So twice a year Hydro One made up a Corporate Risk Profile report to understand the changes in risk threats. 6. 3 Risk treatment options To reduce the risk threats to a tolerable level, action had to be taken. Everyone had to participate in these actions plans, but each manager was assigned as a risk-owner and had the full responsibility for taking actions to mitigate the risks. . 4 Communication and consultation It is really important to have a good and stable communication when implementing the ERM framework. Everyone has to know what their responsibilities are and what is going on in the company and its environment. If everyone is getting involved in the ERM process, each person will be able to look for solutions and thinks about different alternatives to handle different situations. Even the employees on the work floor should be consulted in the ERM process. They could have another view on the risks that threaten the company. They can discover some needs of the company the management could never be aware of. In conclusion, all stakeholders should be involved in the ERM process of the organization. 6. 5 Monitoring and reviewing To make sure the ERM Framework is implemented in the right way and has a positive effect for the company, it is important to monitoring and control the implementation of the Framework. And if needed some adjustments should be done to make the ERM process optimal. As mentioned earlier, the environment of the company and the risks threatening the company are not stable concepts. As a consequence, the ERM process is not stable even. 7. Conclusion One may never underestimate the importance of a well-balanced ERM process. By weighing up the implications of key decisions, appropriate actions can be agreed and delivered to support the chosen strategy. We can conclude that Hydro One’s ERM process is a valid one. ERM adds value for the company and supported the corporation’s managers in making good decisions about risk-based issues. [ 1 ]. ISO 31000, clause 4 Risk Management free essay sample With the diagnostic project metric when an issue does arise a contingency plan can be created if there is a trend toward a major risk as well. Diagnostic project metrics use current project statistics to gage where the project stands throughout the work of the project. This allows the project manager the ability to make better decisions along the route of the project to mitigate risk. Metrics that help improve the decision making, help aid to lower the risk of any project. Diagnostic metrics are comparative measures. The metrics compare a baseline (usually set at time of planning the project) to current project actuals. The actuals are compared to an earned value figure that is determined by where the project should be at that exact moment in time according to the project schedule. These diagnostic metrics will use the actual cost, earned value, and planned value to evaluate schedule variance, schedule performance, cost performance, and cost variance. We will write a custom essay sample on Risk Management or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Schedule performance and schedule variance will evaluate the earned value against the planned value. This will help show if the project is currently on schedule, or if not is it over or under schedule and by how much. Cost variance and cost schedule will reveal how the project is performing compared to the current cost and planned budget. These values will help the project manager assess if the project is on task, and if it is on budget. This will also help identify if changes need to be presented to upper management as to avoid going over budget, or over schedule. With better decision making and having the ability to minimize risk to the stakeholders the diagnostic metrics is the logical reason choice for this project. . These metrics would be appropriate to use for this project because project diagnostic metrics provide current data on project plan execution. These metrics are based on status collection and are used for plan variance analysis, and performance reporting. The key to using this metrics is the use of measurements of earned value management. This will give Xemba Transl ations the opportunity to define a set of measures that can give accurate picture of where the project stands according to the data received from the projects processes. This also marries nicely with the critical path methodology that Xemba Translations has used during its planning and work breakdown structure process. By using these forms of metrics it not only gives Xemba Translations more flexibility to view how the project is currently being assessed, it also takes the most advantage of the numbers Xemba Translations is currently producing in their status reports. These numbers assessed currently will be compared against the planned value to create the comparative metrics. The schedule variance, schedule performance, cost variance, and cost performance will be assessed to address where the project currently stands according to schedule and cost. The most important reason why these metrics will work best for this project is the ability to make better informed decisions because of the comparative data thus minimizing risk to the project. 2. The comparative data (analyzed below in the data section) reveals the important information that project managers need to make the informed decisions about the project. The Xemba Translations project’s current status based on these metrics are as follows: -The project is currently over budget -The project is currently over hours -The project is slightly ahead of schedule by two days By analyzing the cost variance by taking the earned value minus the actual value, the project can be evaluated as a negative number means the actual is greater than the earned value. This analysis has noted that the cost and the hours has returned negative numbers indicating that these two items have exceeded the earned value.

You Wouldnt Want To Experience This Essay Sophomore year. Those were my â€Å"rebellion† days. It started at the end of my freshman year in high school where I began socializing by attending kickbacks, parties, or any social events that I was invited to. Of course, it is where I met a lot of people who introduced me into a whole new world where smoking and drinking were involved. Don’t get me wrong; after all, I am a teenager. Every year, my high school would have a Sadie Hawkin’s Dance. As always, I did not have a date to the Sadie Hawkin’s Dance, because it is where the girl asks the guy out to be her date for the dance. We will write a custom essay on You Wouldnt Want To Experience This specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now It was impossible for me to get a date, because I never had the courage to ask a guy out to be my date. I was too shy and afraid to get rejected. To be safe, I never asked. This time, I chose to go to the dance with a couple of my guy friends who I’ve known for awhile. â€Å"Dude, ready for that dance tonight? † asked Jun. â€Å"Hell yeah! Who else is going with us? † I asked. â€Å"Um I think, it’s just you, Martin, Dan, and me. What’s up? † â€Å"Mmm nothing, just wondering! Don’t forget, 6:00pm† The dance was on a Saturday night from 7-11:00 pm. I told Jun to pick me up from my house at 6:00 pm, because I knew that they are always late no matter what. I was super excited about the dance that I started getting reading by 3:00 pm. I picked out my clothes, laid them down on my bed, and stared at them for a good 5 minutes. Finally, I jumped into the shower where I washed my hair twice, because I wanted it to smell nice. I blow dried my hair and then used the straightening iron to straighten my hair. I busted out my make-up kit and started applying them to my naked face. After hours of doing my hair and make-up, I barely had any time left to put on my clothes and shoes. Honk Honk) â€Å"Gwyneth, hurry up!!! † yelled Dan. â€Å"Coming! 1 minute! † I replied. I grabbed my dance ticket, school ID, money, house key, and out through the door I went. As soon as I got into the car, I realized that I haven’t eaten a proper meal since 2:30 pm and it was already 6:15 pm when they came to pick me up. I didn’t mind, because surprisingly, I was not hungry! â€Å"Alright, what’s the plan? We got an hour to kill before we hit up the dance,† stated Martin. â€Å"I copped a bottle a few days ago, ya’ll down to drink? † asked Dan. â€Å"FUCK YEAH! † answered everyone, except me. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to drink, I was just thinking about how I didn’t have any food in my stomach to help soak up the alcohol. Of course, being a teenager, I was careless and made the wrong decision that eventually lead to the most regretful thing that I ever did. We arrived at the school parking lot 10 minutes before 7:00pm. Therefore, we ended up hanging out at the parking lot for a little bit more. By hanging out, I meant drinking a $35 Hennessy with only 4 people in a back of a van parked at the school parking lot. â€Å"Oh shit, I forgot to grab shot glasses or cups! said Martin. â€Å"Whatever, fuck it. It’s just us anyways, we’ll just drink straight from the bottle,† stated Dan. â€Å"Uhhhhhhhhhh. Why not! † I said with a little hesitation. The bottle was opened and was handed directly to me. I grabbed the bottle and started drinking from it. I chugged two small gulps. It was disgusting, but at that time, I didn’t think about the taste. All I cared about was having fun with my friends on a Saturday night. We passed it around, one person at a time. After a couple rounds, we were down to a couple more gulps left. .u9aef35be55e693f792eec8d6860fb966 , .u9aef35be55e693f792eec8d6860fb966 .postImageUrl , .u9aef35be55e693f792eec8d6860fb966 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u9aef35be55e693f792eec8d6860fb966 , .u9aef35be55e693f792eec8d6860fb966:hover , .u9aef35be55e693f792eec8d6860fb966:visited , .u9aef35be55e693f792eec8d6860fb966:active { border:0!important; } .u9aef35be55e693f792eec8d6860fb966 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u9aef35be55e693f792eec8d6860fb966 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u9aef35be55e693f792eec8d6860fb966:active , .u9aef35be55e693f792eec8d6860fb966:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u9aef35be55e693f792eec8d6860fb966 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u9aef35be55e693f792eec8d6860fb966 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u9aef35be55e693f792eec8d6860fb966 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u9aef35be55e693f792eec8d6860fb966 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u9aef35be55e693f792eec8d6860fb966:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u9aef35be55e693f792eec8d6860fb966 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u9aef35be55e693f792eec8d6860fb966 .u9aef35be55e693f792eec8d6860fb966-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u9aef35be55e693f792eec8d6860fb966:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Accountant Liabitlity EssayBut before it got to me one more time, I told them that I was definitely buzzed and did not want any more alcohol in me. I wanted to enjoy the night, not get drunk and pass out. Finally, after Dan and Martin finished drinking whatever what was left in that bottle, we all walked towards the school together. We stood in line for another 5 minutes getting out permission slips, ID, and dance ticket checked out. Those 5 minutes felt like a good 30 minutes, I don’t know why. â€Å"Okay guys, I’m gonna go look for my friends for a bit, catch up with you guys later. I’m gonna have fun, so do you guys,† I said. â€Å"Don’t have to much fun, Gwyneth. † Martin said with a slight wink. I smiled and walked away. My night has officially started, I thought. I was dancing the night away, laughing with my girl friends, and definitely feeling the music. Moments later, I felt a sudden urge to walk to a corner and tilt my head down. I was very dizzy. Little did I know, the alcohol inside me finally took action 100% and took over my whole mind and body. That was the last thing I remembered. Tossing and turning, while hugging my blanket and rubbing my feet together. I woke up on my living room couch. â€Å"What the hell happened, how’d I get home? † I whispered to myself with confusion. I got up, walked into my room and went back to sleep. Again, I woke up a couple hours later. I grabbed my phone and started texting my friend, Meggie. Me: Hey, do you know what happened last night? I literally woke up in my couch Meggie: Hey girl, haha! You’re parents came to pick you up. Everything is fine, the cops didn’t cite you so I’m sure you’re all good. Me: WHATTTT? MY PARENTS? I’M GOING TO DIE. THANKS GIRL, I’LL TALK TO YOU LATER At that moment, sweat came rushing out of my pores. My life is over. I knew that, it was impossible to try and lie my way out of this. I got caught. An hour passed and I eventually had to get out of my room and face my parents. So, I walked out of my room and slowly walked into the kitchen where they were about to start eating breakfast. I was scared. â€Å"Sit down,† said my dad. â€Å"Do you know what you did yesterday night? Did you know that you were puking everywhere, while you’re so called friends just watched you. You made a complete embarrassment of yourself yesterday night for what? Did you know that the cops were about to cite you? Where did you drink? Who did you drink with? Why? † yelled my mom. Trust me, those questions were not even half of what she asked me. She went on for another 15 minutes, until she finally shed a tear. The interrogation stopped. The whole time, I had my head down. I was so ashamed of myself; I could not look my parents in the eye, especially my mom. Then, she said the most hurtful thing she has ever said to me. â€Å"You disappointed me and your dad last night Eat; you must have a bad hangover,† said my mom as she wiped her tears. Silence. Hearing those words come out of my mother’s mouth broke my heart into pieces. It took a very long time for things to go back to the usual, but it was never really the same. Every time I went out, I would always be reminded to not do anything that will disappoint my parents again. Being a teenager should not be an excuse to do anything that you know you will end up regretting. One thing I learned from this experience is to always think about the consequences before you act. So I ask you, â€Å"how was your Sadie Hawkin’s Dance experience? † Mine was definitely unforgettable.

Does It Matter Where You Go to College

Does It Matter Where You Go to College SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Getting into an elite college is becoming increasingly harder, and many students (and their parents) place tremendous stress on themselves to try to do all they can to get into one of the most prestigious colleges. They believe that graduating from a top college will allow them to have a more prosperous future. While it’s undeniable that elite colleges attract the highest caliber of student, there’s still debate about whether these colleges directly impact professional outcomes. So really, does it matter where you go to college? In this article, I’ll explore the impact of attending an elite institution. While it’s extremely difficult to compare the educational and social impact of one college versus another, we can try to determine the influence a specific college has on one’s professional future. feature image credit:bluefieldphotos bp/Flickr What Is an Elite College? For the purposes of this article, elite colleges are the most selective, prestigious colleges in the country. These colleges are seen as the gold standard, and that's why so many students spend years of hard work and worry to try to get into these schools. Some examples of elite colleges are the Ivy League schools, MIT, Stanford, and the University of Chicago. If you're looking for a complete list, I'd include the top 15 National Universities and the top 5 National Liberal Arts schools in US News on this list of revered super schools. Why It Does Matter Where You Go to College There are a number of reasons why going to a more prestigious schoolcan benefit your future. Below,I’ll detail some of the most important benefits of attending an elite college. Keep in mind that I'm focusing on the potential financial and professional benefits of going to a top college. Additionally, elite colleges may challenge you more academically, and you may enjoy surrounding yourself with other incredibly motivated and successful students. On the other hand, some of the classes at top schools may make you feel overwhelmed. You may feel compelled to select a less rigorous major, or you may not have time to do as many extracurricular activities or have an enjoyable social life. Graduates of Elite Schools Are More Likely to Have Future Financial and Professional Success Probably, the main reason students and their parents care about gaining admission to top colleges is because they believe that attending one of these schools is a ticket to future success. While it’s difficult to prove that going to an elite college makes you successful, there’s a strong relationship between attending an elite school and being successful. On average, graduates from elite schools make more money, and degrees from many elite schools provide the best return on your college investment. Also, while only 2%-5% of all US undergraduates graduate from top schools, 38% of Fortune 500 company CEOs and 44.8% of billionaires graduated from elite institutions. Similarly, of Forbes’s most powerful people, 55.9% of powerful women and 85.2% of powerful men attended elite schools. Graduates of Top Schools Are More Likely to Graduate Even if you believe that all college degrees are equal, the top schools tend to have the highest graduation rates. Those who attend the most prestigious schools are much more likely to get degrees. For example, Harvard’s graduation rate is 98%. Meanwhile, the University of Massachusetts Amherst, a significantly less selective state school, has a graduation rate of 76%. Cal State Los Angeles, a California State University school, has a graduation rate of 41%. There are a number of factors that may contribute to the varying graduation rates. The most selective schools only admit top students; therefore, almost all of their students possess the necessary motivation to ensure that they graduate. Also, selective schools, particularly selective private schools, may offer more support services and guidance that result in higher graduation rates. Finally, some of the larger, less selective state schools have a higher percentage of low-income and nontraditional students. These students face additional obstacles that can prevent them from graduating. Low-Income Students May Benefit the Most From Going to a Top School On average, low-income students have significantly lower graduation rates. Furthermore, low-income students are more likely than wealthier students to attend a college that is less selective than one they could have attended. A widely read study determined that, for students admitted to elite schools, choosing to attend a somewhat selective school like Penn State over the most selective schools like Harvard didn’t impact future earnings for the majority. However, the payoff of attending elite colleges was greater for economically disadvantaged students. Why It Doesn’t Matter Which College You Attend There is definitely an argument to be made that where you go to college is insignificant. What matters are your skills, experience, work ethic, and that you get a college degree. Here are some reasons why it may not matter where you go to college. Going to an Elite School Isn’t Essential for Future Professional Success As previously mentioned, a study concluded that students who were admitted to top schools and opted to go to less selective schools ended up earning as much as their peers who graduated from the top schools. Therefore, you can conclude that what really matters isn’t where you go to school but possessing the attributes that make you competitive for admission to the top schools. Similarly, a Wall Street Journal study found that the prestige of a college doesn’t impact future earnings for many students. Specifically, the studyconcluded that a school’s prestige does have an impact on future earnings for business and liberal arts majors, but there is virtually no impact on future earnings for STEM majors. Additionally, even though graduates from the top schools are more likely to become CEOs or ridiculously wealthy, the majority of people who do aren’t graduates of elite institutions. Any Advantage of Going to an Elite School May Be Offset by Its Cost Even if going to a top college leads to somewhat higher earnings, those higher earnings may be more than offset by the substantially higher price of elite private colleges. For example, for the 2015-2016 academic year, the estimated cost of attendance for a year at Stanford was $65,177. For a California resident, the estimated cost of attendance for UCLA was $32,289. Over four years, that’s a difference of more than $120,000. Even if, hypothetically, the Stanford degree led to an annual salary that was $2,000 more than the UCLA degree, it would take more than 60 years of that extra salary just to cover the added cost of attending Stanford. However, keep in mind that elite private colleges typically offer the most generous financial aid. The listed cost of attendance may not be what you end up having to pay. Elite colleges aren't cheap. Conclusion: Does It Matter Where You Go to College? The short answer is that it depends. Primarily, it depends on your goals and background. If you want to become president or a CEO, you may be more likely to do so if you attend one of the most elite colleges. Similarly, some of the top Wall Street and consulting firms are known to almost exclusively hire employees who graduated from the most prestigious schools. Also, graduates of elite colleges have an advantage in the business world from strong, powerful alumni networks. However, If you want to be a scientist or teacher, there may not be much of an advantage, at least monetarily, from attending a top school. On the other hand, the data does suggest that students from low-income backgrounds may benefit the most from attending elite schools and choosing to attend the most selective school that accepts them. Furthermore, the answer depends on which schools you’re comparing. The difference between graduating from Stanford and graduating from UCLA is probably minimal, if there’s any difference at all, in the eyes of most employers and graduate schools. However, there’s a much larger difference between Stanford and Cal State Los Angeles. Again, you can still achieve any professional goal if you attend from Cal State Los Angeles, but the graduation rate of Stanford is significantly higher, and the average salaries of Stanford grads are substantially higher. It's important to remember that you can graduate from any college, and if you fully apply yourself, you can be a successful CEO, doctor, engineer, or whatever else you aspire to be. Similarly, if you go to an Ivy League college and try to coast through life without showing the dedication that got you into an elite college, you're likely to experience limited success. What Should You Do? Regardless of the school you attend, your work ethic, character, and aptitude will influence your future more than the college you graduated from. Maintain focus and keep working hard, and you’ll give yourself the best opportunity to reach your goals. Because getting a college degree is undoubtedly linked to future success, you want to attend a college that’s a good fit for you and your needs so that you’ll be more likely to graduate (and likely happier!). Find out how to go about researching and choosing a college. Also, research the professional outcomes for students who share your background and graduated with a degree in your intended major. You can use sites like payscale.com and College Scorecard to help you with your research. For example, while the University of Utah is ranked as the 5th best National University in the country by US News, it’s considered one of the very best colleges in the country for video game design. If you want to be a video game designer, going to the University of Utah may be more beneficial to your future career than going to Princeton or Yale. If you’re the first one in your family to go to college, or you have a disability, investigate how well students in your situation fare at a particular school. Each student has specific needs and goals, and you should try to determine how well a college will cater to your needs, and if it's well-equipped to help you fulfill your dreams. What's Next? If you've decided that you want to go to an elite college, find out how to get accepted. Also, you should know how many colleges to apply to and the complete college application timeline. Finally, if you think you can't go to an elite college becauseyou have sub-pargrades, but you want to go to a good school, learn about the best schools with low GPA requirements. Velocity circus Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Velocity circus - Essay Example Velocity circus is the only circus that managed to capture the world in one tent and kept it rising in the sky. This magnificent circus is unique and full of wonders of the world. There is nothing too big or small for their attention. They will do a terrific job of interrupting people’s themes. â€Å"This circus was established 1987 in San Leandro by Greg Angelo Herrera†. (Seabock 2). He is a genuine San Franciscan and the artistic director of Velocity Arts and Entertainment and Velocity Circus. The persona of his has become synonymous with the exceptional nature in which he demonstrates the quality of his arts and entertainment. When Greg Angelo has time, he goes to lecture at art schools and universities around the United States. As such, he is an active mentor, teacher and advocate of emerging artists. In this way he has been able to keep the circus up to date with emerging technologies and circus performance types. In this way, the circus is revitalized with new ide as and entertainment acts that ensure every second and subsequent visit feel like the first visit. As Velocity circus continues to inspire others by their uniqueness, this review will include: why they are unique, the author’s opinion on how they performed, and why people should actually visit such a performance. I have experienced wonder when I attended their performance this past Wednesday. They knew how to touch the heart of the audience member and enchant it with awe. Ultiamtely, Velocity has this way of tapping into every individual’s inner desires and preferences in circus entertainment and somehow seeking to meet them. In such a way, the Velocity circus in San Leandro is considered to be one of the most diverse, colorful and unique acts in the world. From magicians to flying acrobats; Velocity has it all. Whatever one desires and is interested in, they are bound to find it there. They also add some form of unique touch to their acts and performances which help t o distinguish it from other circus acts. Moreover, they are lively and can store vivid images of the experience in ones memory for a long period of time; ultimately building anticipation for a next visit. If I would compare Velocity with other circuses, it would be necessary to conclude that other circuses have the same pattern of characters. For example the clown, juggler and some animal acts. Yet, Velocity has more colorful, distinguished characters and every act is different; not like the other circuses. Furthermore, there are absolutely no animals in their acts. The first performance that I thought was gripping was with regards to the glow in the dark contortionists. â€Å"Probably it is the most visual thing you have ever seen† ( Jennings, News Caster ABC 7) .This act exceeded my expectations on every level. Its extreme yoga was able to add a certain element of grace to the performance. I was also highly impressed that she actually trained when she was 9 years old until now. I further loved this act because of the amount of dedication that she was able to put into her performance. In this way you can literally read it in her eyes and her moves. She does it with so much agility and respect that everyone in the audience went silent in amazement and admiration. The fact that she has dedicated a so much into her performance for so many years makes you appreciate it even more. The second performance that was especially noteworthy was with regards to the dancing act. The woman that threw my heart into a wonderful cardiac arrest was named Darkjia. I love the way she danced; it can only be described as something of a dancing goddess. It was the most amazing performance I have ever seen in my life, matching every beat with subconscious moves with her body. She danced like one without a spine; with such much flexibility you would think she has the body of a snake. She has a 3-year-old boy who resides in her home country of Mongolia. At the end of her perform ance she gives an account of her story. She is in San Francisco doing what she does best to be able to
